Smile? Me? No, no, I wasn't smiling.

.

MIAMI (Reuters) - Florida wildlife managers have launched an experiment to see if they can keep crocodiles from returning to residential neighborhoods by temporarily taping magnets to their heads to disrupt their "homing" ability.

Crocodiles are notoriously territorial and when biologists move them from urban areas to new homes in the wild, they often go right back to the place where they were captured, traveling up to 10 miles a week to get there.

Scientists believe they rely in part on the Earth's magnetic fields to navigate, and that taping magnets to both sides of their heads disorients them.

"They're just taped on temporarily," Hord said. "We just put the magnets on when they're captured and since they don't know where we take them, they're lost. The hope would be that they stay where we take them to."

Can't they just blindfold them and spin them around four times?

No?

So, let me get this straight. I was taught never to smile at a crocodile. Capt Hook learnt to find other ways of telling the time after giving a crocodile a hand. Now we have to tie our Captain Marvel magnets to the heads of the darlings before relocating them to...somewhere.

I think it would be easier for me to move.

Mum nearly choked on her coffee and I'm still giggling too. I would LOVE to see them do that to a croc (Henry doubled up laughing his paws off)

  4. There are only alligators in Florida. Crocodiles Live further way further east.

Except in the Everglades in FL. That is the only place in the world where both coexist. Just a tidbit of info from a former Floridian!

I came to respect the critters when I lived there. I was on the most gator infested lake in the state (in the 60's they would relocate any problem gator into this lake as it hadnt been developed at that time.) As there is no shortage of them, the ones that do migrate into neighborhoods or are especially aggressive, should become handbags and chili! Spending tax money on placing magnets on them to SEE if it will work seems excessive.... but it is keeping someone in a job! lol

  7. Crocodile eyes, crocodile tears. Ferocious crocodiles are reptiles. Best put their reintroduction into nature, far away from some people.

  8. I have a terrible wish.

Get rid of the people. They are the ones disrupting Life. Not the gators.

And, of course, there's a good chance my little wish will come true, if there's one heck of a war, because, if I understand this correctly, the winners in the aftermath will be insects, plants, and....reptiles.
At least as far as land creatures go.
