2008 - it will be busy, it seems.

.Pond scum, up close and personal.

I was bemused to find out that 2008 is the United Nations International Year of the Potato.

Now, I have nothing against the potato but how about an international year for the chocolate mousse? Or the dandelions? Or nasal hairs? Or pond scum? Or...

It all seems a little arbitrary.

So I went exploring and it seems that 2008 is also the international year of frogs, sanitation, spaceships, the polar year, inter-cultural dialogue and coral reefs.

In a catch-all clause, 2008 is also the International Year of Planet Earth.

I guess that includes pond scum.

  1. This it for chipping, mashing or couching?

  2. My husband will vote for international year for chocolate anything and if i don't scream too loudly he will eat something chocolate every single day in honor of it!

I like the idea of celebrating planet earth each day.

    Happy New Year, Lee.

  3. I find the pond scum rather pretty. I guess I should look more closely at the local ponds; I mean, since it's their year and all. (Groan)

  4. Thanks for explaining this. I've had people wishing me a happy international year of the potato and had no idea what they were talking about.

PS. Pond scum has never looked so pretty.

  5. Well, what can I say? Even scum, when u get to know them up close and personal are actually beautiful creatures...

Anyway, that pond scum pic reminds me of The World in Dubai that they're constructing now.

  6. I found the pond scum very attractive too, up close!

  7. pond scum is rather pretty, I had no idea. haha

I have often wondered about the origination of "the year" of anything. I know how Mother's Day got started, but that is just one day. But the year of the potato? That must be one interesting discussion.....

  8. 2007 was the European Year of Equal Opportunites for All. However no-one came round to offer me the chance to run the country or sort out the railways or even to teach the French how to sing. Perhaps they've lost my address.

  9. I was going to pay the pondscum a compliment but it's had far too many already and will be getting ideas above its station...
