"One may have a blazing hearth in one's soul
and yet no one ever came to sit by it.
Passers-by see only a wisp of smoke from the chimney
and continue on their way. "

On this day, in 1888, Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear.
Apparently he presented it to a prostitute called Racheal. (It's not recorded what she said but "F#ck me!" would probably have been suitable at a number of levels.)
...
I wonder what all she'd do for an ear?
ReplyDeletewhat a truly beautiful mind and tortured soul.
ReplyDelete"theyre not listening still. perhaps they never will...."
Oh Lee , I do have a Very soft spot for Vincent. He was a troubled soul like many of our mentally ill who are just thrown out in the world and its bloody 2008! This makes me so angry!
ReplyDeleteHe never knew what its like to have anyone love his paintings and yet - today they go for super millions. Poor vincent .
Most of the masters were mad, they say. hmmmmmm
ReplyDeletecommon among the whores of the day was, "five francs or cut off your ear,"
ReplyDelete(I've never figured out whether that was meant as a curse or what the pimp would do if you didn't pay)
Boneman, you could not have heard that correctly!
