The TransMongolian Train

The train is lovely.  Our cabin was all polished wood and plush carpets.   Briquette fired water heater in each carriage for teas etc.  Station officals line up when the train goes by, even if it doesn't stop.  The hills north of Beijing were riddled with train lines -- it looked like a kids train set.  More importantly, they were used.  There were lots of other trains, mostly goods trains.
