actually, it's as much a form of chain of command demand as anything. US army, we don't have such extreme steps, but dang...the drills were terribly precise, being able to turn, turn enmasse, reverse (quite useful, that) and a b'zillion other stupid showy moves that have nothing to do with reality. Makes me wonder if our present army here even remembers how we booted the British off the continent.
